My First Commission

A colleague randomly approached me last week with the statement, '“You need to make me something for me and Nolan, like a mother and son thing”. She had seen some of my other pieces using sea glass, pebbles and shells and wanted something similar. My mind went into overdrive with ideas and as soon as I got home, I set to work. What I love about creating a new piece is the process of starting with an idea, selecting possible treasures and playing about with them until I find something that works. I am always frustrated at first when it seems I just can’t get it ‘right’, but time has taught me to persevere because it will eventually all fall into place and I kind of just know when what is in front of me is right.

The most interesting part of creating this piece of art, was working alongside the person whose home it would soon be adorning! We weren't in the same room, but no matter because WhatsApp came to the rescue. Back and forth with images of my work in progress and I could make sure that it would work for me and her. She was made up with the final piece and sent me photos of it in situ. Looking at it now, I love how it truly is a one of a kind and I can say exactly where and when I collected the sea glass and driftwood (Blitz Beach, Crosby). I can make similar in the future but there will never be another that is exactly the same.

“Mother and Son”

How beautiful it looks on her mantelpiece!
